Off-Topic Tuesday: An Ode To Alexander (“I Will Call You Al”)

off-topic

You know that song by Paul Simon You Can Call Me Al?

Well, I just realized I often call my baby Alexander by the nickname Al. Obviously, I knew I had to make my own version of the Paul Simon song.

I rewrote the whole thing, but I had a hard time singing that 3rd verse (I couldn’t get the timing right). Because of that, my version is just verse chorus verse chorus. BUT I know you are curious, so the third verse is shared at the end. Enjoy. 😉

I Will Call You Al
Bethany K

“Baby, why don’t you eat?” I say.
Why are you making this hard for me?
Why did I make all of this food
When you just throw it on the ground?
One day, I think you’ll appreciate it.
One day, you might just clear your plate:
scrambled eggs, some of those pancakes,
blueberries and raisins.
Slow-eater, slow-eater….
Watch as the minutes pass.
I’ve been done for half an hour!
Mr. Bigbelly, Bigbelly
Take another bite, will ya?
You know, I don’t find this stuff amusing anymore!

You’re lil’ Alexander.
I’m your mom, your chef, your pal.
You can call me mama,
But baby, when I call you,
I will call you Al.

“Baby, why don’t you sleep?” I say.
“Heard of sleep deprivation?”
“C’mon, give me a little break, huh?”
And man, my nights are so long!
All I want is ten more minutes,
Every single morning.
I get up anyway to play
Now that you’re mobile and
Gone gone.
You’re somewhere, and you’re very quiet.
Who knows what mess you’re into?
All alone, alone,
You’re putting toys into the dryer
or dancing on the coffee table.

You’re lil’ Alexander.
I’m your mom, your chef, your pal.
You can call me mama
But baby, when I call you,
I will call you Al.

“Baby, how’d you get so sweet?”
Look at your cute baby feet,
Your sweet baby smile, and
You got me hooked on you.
You don’t quite speak the language,
But you can get around.
You walk and you fall:
You’re surrounded by the ground, the ground.
Your eyes, they find my face.
I smile, you pause, then smile back.
You look around, around,
Then get up and walk some more
On and on to infinity.
You say “mama” and “babababa”

You’re lil’ Alexander.
I’m your mom, your chef, your pal.
You can call me mama
But baby, when I call you,
I will call you Al.

Okay now I’m thoroughly embarrassed. But hopefully you enjoyed the silliness of it all.
Happy Tuesday!

This is, hands down, the cutest song ever. I hope you always sing this to Al!
